In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Your Journey to Parenthood Is in Safe Hands with Fertina IVF

The dream of becoming a parent can sometimes be a longer and more challenging journey than expected. However, thanks to scientific medical advancements, many couples today can easily turn this dream into reality through assisted reproductive technologies. At Fertina IVF, in our modern clinic in Cyprus, we professionally support your hopes with IVF (ICSI) treatments.

What Is IVF? (In Vitro Fertilization)

IVF, or in vitro fertilization, literally means fertilization outside the body, in a laboratory setting. In practice, it is a treatment in which eggs collected from the woman are fertilized with sperm in the lab, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus. This method is safely applied in cases where pregnancy cannot be achieved naturally or when there is a risk of genetic disorders.

Stages of IVF Treatment:

1. Ovarian stimulation

Daily, painless subcutaneous hormone injections are administered to support egg development.

2. Egg retrieval (OPU)

Under light anesthesia (sedation), eggs are collected in a short 10–15 minute procedure.

3. Fertilization

Sperm cells are injected directly into the eggs using the ICSI technique under laboratory conditions.

4. Embryo monitoring and selection

Embryos are observed until day 5, and the best quality ones are selected.

5. Embryo transfer

A simple, painless procedure in which embryos are placed into the uterus.

6. Pregnancy test

About 12 days after transfer, pregnancy is confirmed through a blood test.

What Is ICSI? (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

ICSI is a more advanced and precise form of IVF. Previously, it was used mainly in cases of low sperm count or poor sperm motility, but today, due to its high success rates, it is routinely applied to all patients at our clinic. In this method, a single sperm is directly injected into the egg under a microscope.

Advantages of ICSI

  • High success rates in cases of male infertility
  • Applicable even when sperm count is extremely low
  • Ideal for couples with previous fertilization failures

When Is IVF/ICSI Recommended?

IVF (ICSI) is recommended when intrauterine insemination (IUI) or medication treatments are unsuccessful. It may also be the first option in cases of advanced maternal age, male infertility, or genetic risks.

Factors Affecting IVF Success

Success rates vary for each couple. At Fertina IVF, we carefully evaluate all factors to maximize outcomes.

1. Maternal Age

  • Higher success in women under 35
  • Egg quality and quantity decrease with age
  • Alternative options like egg donation, mitochondrial transfer, and exosome transfer may be offered

2. Egg & Sperm Quality

  • Embryo quality depends on healthy eggs and sperm
  • At our clinic, sperm selection (swim-up technique) is routinely applied before ICSI

3. Uterine & Tubal Health

  • Proper uterine lining is essential for implantation
  • Conditions like fibroids, polyps, or adhesions are treated before IVF
  • HSG and hysteroscopy are performed when needed

4. Embryo Quality & Transfer

  • Day 5 (blastocyst) transfers yield higher success rates
  • Advanced genetic testing (PGD, NGS, single-gene analysis) can be performed if needed

5. Lifestyle & General Health

  • Smoking, alcohol, obesity, and poor sleep negatively impact fertility
  • Healthy habits improve treatment outcomes

6. Personalized Treatment Protocols

  • Tailored according to hormonal profile and ovarian reserve

7. Clinic & Expertise

  • Experience, laboratory infrastructure, and precise patient monitoring are critical
  • At Fertina IVF, our medical team and embryologists apply the latest scientific methods with state-of-the-art IVF technologies

Treatment Process

1. Consultation

The patient goes to the fertility specialist for their first visit. At this visit, the clinician will discuss your medical history and perform required tests and create an individual treatment plan.

2. Ovulation Induction

The woman will be treated with ovulation drugs to induce multiple oocytes to mature. This is known as controlled ovarian stimulation.

3. Egg Retrieval

Once the yolks are matured to the maximum, the yolks are extracted from the ovary through a minimally invasive surgery. This is typically performed under light sedation or anesthesia.

4. Embryo Development

Fertilized eggs/embryos are then in vitro cultured for days while they continue to grow before they reach the blastocyst stage.

5. Fertilization

In the laboratory the egg and sperm are mixed and their fertilisation is observed. During ICSI a single sperm is introduced in each mature oocyte.

6. Sperm Retrieval

If a partner's sperm is used, one sample will be taken prior to the egg collection process. Sperm can be collected directly from the testicle or epididymis in men with established fertility disorders through TESE/TESA.

7. Embyro Transfer

One or more embryos are then carried gently into the woman's uterus via a thin flexible catheter. This is a relatively simple and painless procedure.

8. Pregnancy Test

One or more embryos are then carried gently into the woman's uterus via a thin flexible catheter. This is a relatively simple and painless procedure.

I had an amazing experience at this IVF clinic. From the very first consultation, the staff made me feel supported and at ease. They were incredibly professional, thorough, and genuinely caring throughout the entire process. Thanks to their expertise, I am now expecting, and I am so grateful for their guidance. I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone seeking fertility treatment.

What is the process for using a donor and what information is provided?

For patients requiring an egg or sperm donor, we have a comprehensive and carefully managed donor programme. The process is governed by strict local regulations that ensure complete donor anonymity.

Our donors undergo rigorous screening, including extensive medical, genetic, and psychological evaluations, to ensure the highest standards of quality and safety. While the donor's identity remains anonymous, you will be provided with a detailed, non-identifying profile which typically includes:

  • Age and physical characteristics (hair/eye colour, height, build)
  • Blood type
  • Nationality and educational background
  • Profession and personal interests/hobbies

This allows you to choose a donor with characteristics that are important to you while respecting the legal framework of anonymity.

How do you manage treatment for international patients travelling to North Cyprus?

We specialize in making the process seamless for our international patients. Your journey is managed by a dedicated International Patient Coordinator who will be your single point of contact.

After your initial consultation, we will create your bespoke treatment plan.

We offer two flexible pathways for our patients travelling from abroad.

1. The Coordinated Pathway (1-Week Stay in Cyprus)

For your convenience, you can begin the initial stages of your treatment at home. We will coordinate with a UK-based clinic for your preliminary scans and tests. You then travel to Cyprus to complete the final stages, requiring a stay of as little as one week for your key procedures. This option is popular as it minimizes your time away from home.

2. The Immersive Pathway (3-Week Stay in Cyprus)

Alternatively, you can choose to undertake your entire treatment cycle with us in Cyprus. This allows you to step away from daily routines and relax in our calm, supportive environment. This all-inclusive pathway typically requires a stay of approximately three weeks.

Whichever pathway you choose, your coordinator will assist with planning your trip, providing recommendations for premium accommodation and organizing private airport transfers. Our goal is to manage all the logistics, allowing you to focus completely on your treatment in a calm, stress-free environment.

What are your success rates and how can we trust them?

This is often the first and most important question we receive. While we are proud of our excellent success rates, which are in line with top European clinics, we believe in providing you with a transparent and realistic perspective. Rather than focusing on a single, generic statistic, we provide a personalized success projection during your initial consultation. This is based on your specific age, medical history, and diagnosis.

Our success is built upon the expertise of our world-class clinicians and embryologists, who utilize state-of-the-art laboratory technology, including AI-driven embryo selection. We are committed to ethical and transparent reporting, ensuring you have the confidence and clarity you need to make an informed decision.
